Benin Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the Beninese Flag
Flag of Benin was adopted on 16 November 1959. It is composed of three stripes : green vertical at the hoist, red and yellow horizontal at the wind. As described in the words of the national anthem, the colors have a special meaning and are part of the most used colors in Africa. Green recalls the hope of the people, the yellow the mineral wealth of the country, and red courage of residents. It will not be raised from 1975 to 1990, while the country was going through a Marxist dictatorship period.
