Germany Flag

The explanation for the symbols of the German Flag

The German flag comes from the March 1848 revolution. At that time, the country, called German Confederation, revolted against the members of the Holy Alliance who wanted to restore the old regime. This revolution started in Baden, last a year and a half, and the protesters will endow this flag to give meaning and unity to their ideal. But the established Frankfurt Parliament lasted only two years. It is only after the establishment of the Weimar Republic that this flag became the national flag. It consists in three horizontal stripes of equal width: black – red - gold, and was adopted in 1949. These colours represent the freedom of the people, particularly related to democracy born after the dictatorship of the Second World War. In 1959, the flag of East Germany is changed to differentiate it from that of West Germany. Socialist symbols were added in its center : wheat for farmers, hammer of the proletariat, and a compass for the upper classes. These are political symbols that will not survive the reunification of Germany on 3 October 1990.
