Nigeria Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the Nigerian Flag
Flag of Nigeria was adopted on 1st October 1960. It is composed of three vertical stripes green - white - green. This is one of the few African flags that is not a direct reference to the pan-African colors. This is Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, then student, who won the competition launched in 1959, at the country's independence. While green represents the country's natural resources and agriculture, white symbolizes, as so often in heraldry, peace. It seems that the designer of the flag was also inspired by the Niger River flowing through the many forests of the country.
