Vatican Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the Vatican Flag
The Vatican flag was adopted on 7 June 1929. It is composed of two vertical stripes: the yellow at the hoist and the white at the wind. In the middle of the white stripe is placed a symbol that brings together several elements. Firstly, the keys of St. Peter, which is the symbol of surrender by Jesus to his apostles of the keys to the kingdom of heaven: "And I tell you that you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against them. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Gospel according to Saint Matthew). These keys are surmounted by papal tiara, crown of the Pope, who leads the Vatican State.
