Turkey Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the Turkish Flag
The flag of Turkey was adopted in 1844, but officialized on June 5, 1936. It consists of a red background on which stand a white crescent and a white five-pointed star. It is very close from Tunisia flag, which added a white circle in the center. These symbols are very deeply rooted in Muslim culture: the five branches of the five pillars of Islam: Muhammad, prayer, Ramadan, pilgrimage to Mecca and almsgiving, and crescent for the last crescent moon, symbolizing the end of Ramadan. It is said that these symbols were, before Islami appeared, widely used by the Turkish peoples of Minor Asia. This flag is largely derived from the Ottoman flag. The red has a meaning still strong today, as it represents the country's secularism, as opposed to the use of green as a symbol of Islam.
