Macedonia Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the Macedonian Flag
The flag of Macedonia was adopted on 5 October 1995. It consists of a red background on which is placed in yellow, a reminiscent symbol of the sun of Vergina. The latter clearly adorned the flag before 1995, but was then abandoned to ease tensions with the Greeks, who claimed it as a national symbol, since Macedonia was, according to them, a long ago Greek province. Sun adorned the tomb of Philip II of Macedonia. It is the symbol of the Argéade people which ruled Macedonia, but can also be considered as a further use of the sun, well represented in heraldic.
