Austria Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the Austrian Flag
The flag of Austria was adopted during the reign of Duke Frederick II in 1230. It consists of three stripes arranged horizontally : red - white - red. The three bands are of equal width. It seems that the legend is attributed to a battle won by the Duke of Babenberg against Arabs. It is said that his shirt, stained with blood, has inspired this drawing, because after removing his belt, it was a white stripe surrounded by two red stripes. This legend is widespread in the countries of Northern Europe, especially in Denmark. A legend refers to the same type of adventure for the Battle of Reval in 1219, when Valdemar the Victorious took off his belt and shoulder harness. Then formed a white cross on red background, reproduced on the flag of Denmark, and has inspired more generally Scandinavian Cross. The Austria had to anbandon its flag during World War 2, after the Nazi invasion. The country recovers it in 1945 after Germany was defeated.
