Angola Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the Angolan Flag
Angola flag was adopted on 11 November 1975. It is composed of two horizontal stripes : red top and black on bottom. The whole is surmounted by a yellow logo representing a five-pointed star surrounded by a half toothed wheel and a machete. This flag is inherited from the MPLA, who led the revolt against the Portuguese occupant. Red represents the blood shed for independence, while black symbolizes the African continent. Yellow symbolizes the country's wealth. What is striking in this flag is the central symbol : the wheel and the machete, which refer to industry and agriculture, are crossed like the hammer and sickle on USSR’s flag. Indeed, the marxist MPLA, received the unofficial support of this country. The star is a powerful symbol of solidarity.
