Algeria Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the Algerian Flag
The Algerian flag was adopted in this form on 3 July 1963. It consists of two equal width stripes , one green (at the hoist*) and one white (at the wind*). They are topped with an emblem representing a crescent around a five-pointed star. This flag owes a lot Messali Hajj, a staunch supporter of the country's independence which creates, since 1927, various popular and politic movements in this direction. Then dominated by the FLN (National Liberation Front), he will let FLN his current activities to retire in France. The current flag is the same as that imagined by the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic, the political party of the FLN, who negotiated the Evian agreements for independence in 1962. The five-pointed star is commonly accepted as representing the five pillars of Islam, while the crescent refers to the growing crescent of moon, which marks the end of Ramadan for Muslims. Green is the symbol of the earth, while the White refers, as often in heraldry *, peace.
